Karadjordjevo Agreement

2023年7月3日

The Karadjordjevo agreement, also known as the Karađorđevo Meeting or Karađorđevo Memorandum, was a political agreement that was signed by Serbian and Croatian officials in 1991. The agreement was signed during a meeting at the Karađorđevo hunting lodge in northern Serbia, hence the name.

The agreement was highly controversial because it sought to divide Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was then part of Yugoslavia. The agreement was intended to be a secret agreement, but it was leaked to the public shortly after the meeting. The agreement was signed by Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, and Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic.

The Karadjordjevo agreement sparked outrage among Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) and Croatians, who saw it as an attempt by Serbia and Croatia to redraw the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina and annex parts of it. The agreement was seen as a precursor to the Bosnian War, which began in 1992 and lasted until 1995.

The Karadjordjevo agreement played a significant role in the breakup of Yugoslavia and the ensuing conflicts in the Balkans. It was seen as a blatant violation of the territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it fueled nationalist tensions and animosities between Serbs, Croats, and Bosniaks.

In the aftermath of the Bosnian War, the Karadjordjevo agreement was widely criticized, and its signatories were seen as responsible for the war and its atrocities. Milosevic and Karadzic were later charged with war crimes and genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Today, the Karadjordjevo agreement remains a controversial and contentious topic in the Balkans. It is seen as a symbol of the nationalist and sectarian tensions that led to the breakup of Yugoslavia and the ensuing wars, and it serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of ethnic and religious divisions.
